MiaoMix Monday #4 [Folk]

This week for MiaoMix Monday I put together a playlist made up of folk songs. This mix consists of contemporary folk music like fuzz folk or folk rock. I’m not the biggest expert on folk music, but it makes me feel a lot more calm when I listen to it and these are some of my personal favorites. Some of you will probably recognize some of the artists here, such as Neutral Milk Hotel or The Tallest Man on Earth, but hopefully some of you will find your new favorite band.

Fleet Foxes – “He Doesn’t Know Why”
Brett Dennen – “Ain’t No Reason”
The Tallest Man On Earth – “I Won’t Be Found”
S. Carey – “In The Dirt”
Dan Mangan – “About as Helpful as You can be Without Being Any Help at All”
M. Ward – “For Beginners”
Horse Feathers – “Curs in the Weeds”
Gold Leaves – “The Ornament”
Neutral Milk Hotel – “In the Aeroplane over the Sea”

The Wonder Years B-Side

The Wonder Years just released a brand new b-side for Suburbia I’ve Given You All and Now I’m Nothing (check out Frank’s review for the album here). This acoustic cut is titled “Living Room Song” and was made available exclusively to those that purchased the Japanese version of the album. Check out the song below.

MP3: The Wonder Years – “Living Room Song”

The Black Keys’ New Album

Turns out the news about Blakroc 2 was only a rumor, and blues-rock band The Black Keys denied that any talk for that project has begun or will ever happen. However, the band has just announced that they will be releasing a new album on December 6th. The album will be titled El Camino and you can watch a trailer for the album below. The trailer features Bob Odenkirk (Saul!) and you can check out the website WannaBuyMyVan.com while you’re at it.

Interview: The Calm Blue Sea

A couple of weeks ago I made a post-rock playlist for MiaoMix and included “Quiet” by The Calm Blue Sea. That was a song that really blew me away the first time I listened to it. I recently got the chance to talk with Steve (drummer) and Kyle (bassist) from the band. We talked about working on new material, the music scene in Austin, comparisons to other post-rock bands, and more. They were really nice guys and it was a pleasure to get the chance to talk with them. Steve started out the interview and then Kyle came in about halfway into the interview.

What are your names and specific roles in the band?

Steve: I’m Steve and I play drums and we all write.

So you and Kyle (bassist) were both there when the band started?

Steve: I guess I’m an original member and Kyle is not. He’s our 2nd or 3rd bass player, but he’s been with us since 2009 so I don’t think he’s going anywhere.

Why did you guys choose the name The Calm Blue Sea?

Steve: Okay, I have no explanation for that. Maybe Chris does, but they had it when I got in already. (more…)

MiaoMix Monday #3 [Rap Remixes]

This week’s playlist is a collection of rap remixes of pop/indie songs. Sampling songs like these has become increasingly popular in the last few years and it’s resulted in some pretty creative songs. It’s always pleasant to listen to a track and recognize a familiar song that I already love, especially if the rapper does the sample justice. This week’s mix contains some chill rap and upbeat rap. Samples include “Don’t Stop Believin'” and “Rolling in the Deep”. Listen to the mix below:

Neako – “The Dawn”
Josh Bonney – “Gimme the Beat (ft. Benjy Johnson)”
Chiddy Bang – “Cameras”
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis – “Otherside”
OCD: Moosh & Twist – “City Kids”
Jamie xx – “Rolling in the Deep (REMIX) ft. Childish Gambino
Foster the People – “Pumped Up Kicks (DJ Reflex Remix) (feat. Kendrick Lamar)”
Olu – “I’m Ballin”

1) E. Watson
2) Foregone
3) Burying Davy
4) I 4 U & U 4 Me
5) Row Jimmy (Grateful Dead cover)
6) Sonnet

MiaoMix Monday #2 [Post-Rock]

Last week’s MiaoMix was full of electro party songs, so this time I made a more chill mix to listen to. This week, I put together a post-rock playlist. For people who are not familiar with the genre, post-rock is similar to rock but it ignores the typical song structure that rock music has. Most post-rock songs rely on quiet arpeggios and simple chord progressions which build up to powerful crescendos. Most songs are also instrumental, so this music is great for studying. Listen to the playlist below. (Some songs are really long. Sorry.)

miaou – “Intro”
Sigur Rós – “Hoppípolla”
The Calm Blue Sea – “We Happy Few”
múm – “Green Grass of Tunnel”
This Will Destroy You – “Quiet”
Mogwai – “Auto Rock”
pg.lost – “Yes I Am”
Explosions in the Sky – “So Long, Lonesome”

A Great Big Pile of EPs

Brooklyn indie rock trio, A Great Big Pile of Leaves, will be releasing two new EP’s on November 1st. One EP is titled Live from the Living Room- Volume One, which was recorded in the living room of Motion City Soundtrack keyboardist Jesse Johnson. This is a joint release by Topshelf Records and Pressing Matters, which is run by Johnson. The other is a studio-recorded EP titled Boom, which will be released by Topshelf Records. Both EP’s will have new and re-recorded songs and will be available digitally and on vinyl only.

New Justice Music Video

Justice has just unveiled the music video for their new single, “Audio, Video Disco”. The new single is also the title of the new album, which will be released on October 25th. The song has gotten mixed reactions because the song is a lot different than their old sound, but we want to know what you think about the new song. Watch the video below.

Happy Birthday Freddie Mercury

Very few vocalists have been given as high praise as lead vocalist for the rock band Queen. Known as one of rock’s greatest entertainers, Freddie Mercury would have turned 65 today and the band is making this event a very special occasion. Today, Google’s doodle is dedicated to him. For this event, the band has uploaded the entire video ofLive at Wembley Stadium. You can watch the video below.
