Stream: Ab-Soul – Control System

Ab-Soul‘s Control System is now available for purchase on iTunes via Top Dawg Entertainment, but you can stream the entire album below for free. For his new release, Ab-Soul teamed up with a slew of top-notch rappers including Danny Brown, BJ the Chicago Kid, and his fellow Black Hippy members Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, and ScHoolboy Q. Heavily recommended tracks include “Terrorist Threat”, “ILLuminate”, and “Double Standard”.

Control System was described by Kendrick as one of the most important releases in the entire Black Hippy momvement. “May 11th, Control System, Ab-Soul. Once you get that piece, you’ll really understand this TDE thing. Then, you might be fortunate to get the Black Hippy that everything’s talking about. That’s our prized possession, that’s our baby. We have fun with that, and I don’t know. Once you throw the music out, people start putting the numbers behind it. We want that to be organic… We got music, though. A lot of music.”

Listen: Azealia Banks – “Jumanji”

Considering all the drama that’s been surrounding her, Azealia Banks has made it quite clear that she has an attitude and a personality, but when it comes to music, Banks has everything down pat. Her latest track is “Jumanji”, a song that will appear on her next mixtape. Over some steel drum production that seems to draw influence from Jamie xx, Azealia proves yet again that she has the talent to back up her attitude. I mean, it’s kind of hard to hate when she’s killing everything she actually appears on.

Listen: Ab-Soul – “ILLuminate (feat. Kendrick Lamar)”

“I used to wanna rap like Jay-Z / Now I feel like I’m runnin’ laps around Jay-Z / Nas ain’t seen nothing this nasty / B.I.G. and Pac got it coming when I pass too / You got the mic, I ain’t the one you wanna pass to.” – Ab-Soul

In just three days, Black Hippy and Top Dawg Entertainment member Ab-Soul will be releasing his new album, Control System. In preparation, Soul posted up “ILLuminate”, his joint track with long-time friend and fellow TDE collaborator Kendrick Lamar, who will also be releasing a new album of his own, Good Kid in a Mad City, later this year. Over some smooth Skhye Hutch production, Ab-Soul spits two insane verses before giving Kendrick a turn as well. It’s ridiculous how much quality these guys are bringing to the game and “ILLuminate” certainly meets these high expectations. Control System is out May 11th.

Listen: Passion Pit – “Take A Walk”

To call Passion Pit‘s forthcoming album Gossamer a highly anticipated release wouldn’t even be doing it justice. Fans of the band’s infectious electropop sound have all been eagerly awaiting new music from Michael Angelakos and company since the release of Manners in 2009. And finally, after quite a number of delays and false rumors, we have new music from the indie darlings. Below, you can listen to the first single, “Take A Walk”. Surprisingly, the song doesn’t feature the falsetto singing we’ve come to expect from Passion Pit, but the song is still insanely infectious and fun. Gossamer will be released on July 24th via Columbia.

Listen: Animal Collective – “Honeycomb” & “Gotham”

On June 26th, Animal Collective will officially release their new single “Honeycomb” / “Gotham” through Domino Records. Just today, the psychedelic four-piece announced their intentions to release the new two-song 7-inch and with it, a free stream of both songs, which you can check out below. If things go according to plan, we should expect to see a new full-length release later this year.

Listen: Meek Mill – “Amen (feat. Drake & Jeremih)”

The latest from Maybach Music’s Meek Mill (how’s that for alliteration?) features the dream chaser on a beat that sounds quite different from his usual gritty bangers. To change things up a bit, Meek teamed up with Young Angel and the smooth crooner Jeremih over some church-inspired piano notes to show his versatility as an artist. Amen. Dreamchasers 2 is out May 7th.

Listen: The Gaslight Anthem – “45″

On July 24th, New Jersey rockers the Gaslight Anthem will be unveiling their fourth album and first since joining Mercury Records, Handwritten. And with it, the band plans on reverting back to their punkier roots, despite all the acclaim that followed the more mature, more mellow American Slang that saw its release back in 2010.

Our first taste arrives with the stunning “45″, which was recorded early in the Handwritten sessions. Frontman Brian Fallon revealed to RollingStone, ”This song felt to us like we still had something to say in this long line of rock & roll tradition. It made the path clear as to what we should do next. Sometimes you just have to leave things behind . . . turn the record over.” I, for one, am certainly not complaining.

Lana Del Rey & Azealia Banks Team Up

Smims&Belle is the name of the new DJ side project of Mark Foster and Isom Innis (of Foster the People). Their first project comes in the form of a Lana Del Rey remix, with the two remixing “Blue Jeans” and enlisting the help of Azealia Banks for a new guest verse. Below, you can listen to the full extended remix. Foster and Innis have also uploaded the “original” version of their remix as well, which you can peep here.

Jack White Makes Solo Debut With ‘Blunderbuss’

Jack White‘s debut solo album is set to be released on April 24th, 2012, however, despite White’s attempts to stop it being leaked (including sending promotional copies in the form of vinyl records only), it was leaked on April 15th.

The album portrays the jigsaw pieces of White’s career coming together to create thirteen exemplary tracks. A wide variety of genres are covered in the album from blues to garage rock, including White’s signature catchy riffs, and distorted vocals. Styles from all of his projects including The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather as well as from his musical influences like Son House are all definitely present in the album. It represents White’s chance to produce a record which is truly representative of him. In his own words, “I’ve put off making records under my own name for a long time but these songs feel like they could only be presented under my name. These songs were written from scratch, had nothing to do with anyone or anything else but my own expression, my own colors on my own canvas.”

Blunderbuss is now streaming on iTunes for free listening and will available for purchase on the 24th, including vinyl copies of the album from Third Man Records.
