Premiere: Dominic Serendip – “Live Lucid (Pt. I)”

Today, Lost In The Sound is extremely excited and honored to premiere a brand new song from two-thirds of upcoming hip-hop trio THEBLKHANDS. “Live Lucid (Pt. 1)” features two-thirds of the group and is the final single from Dominic Serendip‘s debut album Live Lucid, set for release in early July. The track is produced by ILLA, who also produced THEBLKHANDS’ first single with Big K.R.I.T. The group’s 2nd single, which features Smoke DZA & Fenix, will be out very soon.

Both Dominic and ILLA are on point on “Live Lucid (Pt. 1)”, which serves as an introduction to Dominic’s lifestyle and philosophy. Living lucid, as he describes it, is being able to live out your dreams and to create your own destiny. As he tears up ILLA’s masterfully constructed strings with verse after verse, it’s clear that he lives what he preaches: Dominic’s passion for his music and his desire to make his dreams come true shine in his rhymes and because of that, I’m glad to have a chance to premiere the track today and be a part of his lucid dreaming. Listen: THEBLKHANDS – “I’m Gone (feat. Big K.R.I.T.)”

Newcomers THEBLKHANDS, a hip-hop trio consisting of rappers Cazzie Jetson and Dominic Serendip and producer ILLA, make their debut today with their first single “I’m Gone”. Featuring none other than Big K.R.I.T., who takes over the track with a killer second verse, “I’m Gone” is an introspective peek into the pasts of THEBLKHANDS and though we haven’t learned all that much about them yet, I’m incredibly excited for new music from the group. They plan to release their first album later this year with additional features from talented rhymers Smoke DZA and Skyzoo.

Here’s a new track from J. Cole aka Young Simba, who released his debut studio album Cole World: The Sideline Story last year. Produced by Canei Finch, “Grew Up Fast” features Cole spitting straight fire over a killer vocal sample. Soul meets Cole, double double crossed.

Watch: The Roots – undun

Director Clifton Bell teamed up with the Legendary Roots Crew on a short film for the hip-hop group’s new concept album, undun. The 9-minute-long clip features four cuts from the album, including “Sleep”, “Stomp (feat. Greg Porn)”, “Tip The Scale (feat. Dice Raw)”, and “Make My (feat. Big K.R.I.T. & Dice Raw)”. undun is now in stores everywhere and is one of my personal favorite releases of the year, describing the fall of a fictional character named Redford Stephens.

“undun is the story of this kid who becomes a criminal, but he wasn’t born criminal. He’s not the nouveau exotic primitive bug-eyed gunrunner… he’s actually thoughtful and is neither victim nor hero. Just some kid who begins to order his world in a way that makes the most sense to him at a given moment… At the end of the day… isn’t that what we all do?”

Stream: The Roots – ‘undun’

It’s sad to admit that nowadays, leaks are almost inevitable. Unless you devote every living moment towards protecting your music from being leaked or don’t allow any advanced listens — I’m looking at you Kanye and Jay — your album will probably get leaked. After releasing thirteen records, it seems The Roots know what they’re doing and a few days ago, partnered with NPR to offer a free stream of their latest, undun, a strikingly powerful album about the fictional Redford Stephens, a poor Philadelphian kid who gets tangled up in the drug trade.

With help from Sufjan Stevens (his song “Redford” inspired the character’s name), Just Blaze, Big K.R.I.T., and more, The Roots’ first attempt at a concept album is an inspiring and beautiful piece of work. You can listen to the whole thing at NPR right now, with the album available in stores everywhere on December 6th via Def Jam.
