Matt Corby’s Past, Present & Future

Matt Corby
After a very successful 2012, which found Matt Corby’s name spread with his song Brother, winning the ARIA music awards “Song of the Year”, as well as being nominated for “Breakthrough Artist” and “Best Male  Artist”. Though he was formerly a contestant on Australian Idol, Corby has demonstrated how that is behind him, releasing an incredible three song EP, Made of Stone. His voice can only be described as, beautifully haunting.

Matt Corby has also released four other EPs: Into the Flame, Transition to Colour, My False, and Song For… This artist is not only meant for fans of folk music, but everyone. He writes powerful songs to pump you up, as well as more emotional laid back ones to listen to when relaxing. He is currently in the studio writing and recording for his debut album which is scheduled to be released next year. To keep up to date, you can check out his website and his Facebook Page where you can download his music.

The Story of The Falls

The Falls

They met. They fell in love.
They wrote songs.
They fought. They made up.
They broke up.
They wrote songs.

The Falls focus their songwriting on documenting the love, betrayal, and the heartbreak of relationships. This Sydney based indie/folk duo decided that it would be better to create music, rather than just wallow in sadness. These fledgling recordings were just the beginning of what has become their debut EP HOLLYWOOD, which will soon be released sometime during March in North America.

Known for their live performances, and the emotion that is put into them, The Falls create intoxicating melodies, paralleled with their signature elegant harmonies. With an unmistakable sound, barefoot collaborators and best friends The Falls are definitely worth watching out for in 2013. For more information you can check out their website, and see their North American tour dates below.

Stream: T.E.A.M.S – Sierra City Center (Diamond Club)

385155066-1
In late February T.E.A.M.S released a new album, Sierra City Center (Diamond Club). T.E.A.M.S is the psychedelic/lo-fi project of Sean Bowie. The project shows a lot of similarities to Walsh, through the electronic vibes that have a really soothing yet dazed feeling, which is most apparent in the title track. Although this record is far from a copy of Walsh, it has a very psychedelic and abstract presence in songs like When Jesus Talks To Me and Yuba. This record is ultimately a challenging yet fun listen, with a relatively individualistic sound at times. The record is available for purchase through their Bandcamp page, or you can stream it below.

Listen: Pairs – “Eltham Join”

Pairs Eltham Join
Last week Pairs released, as the title suggests, an album of nine solely piano and vocal tracks. Far from their usual noise rock sound, and even farther from Elton John himself, this collection of songs are commendable. Despite an apology on their Bandcamp page from Australian frontman, Xiao Zhong stating that he is “fucking tone deaf” it doesn’t seem to matter. The lyrics throughout the album would appear out of place coming from the lips of an auto-tuned artist, complaining about the relatable annoyance of promotional texts in Shanghai. The sheer zest and originality of Xiao Zhong’s words on every release so far that Pairs have put out mask all the other critiqued imperfections. Stream the album below and download it from Bandcamp.

Listen: Lake Michigan – “Self-Titled”

Lake Michigan
Lake Michigan, lo-fi acoustic solo project equipped with disarmingly honest lyrics have released their debut self-titled album. Chris Marks, inspired by the hushed and melodic sounds of Death Cab For Cutie and American Football, recorded, mixed, and mastered this release by himself. This collection of nine slow and sad tracks accurately touches on the themes of adolescent ontology. The album is available to purchase from Wolf Town DIY as a CD and also you can stream it below from Bandcamp.

A message from Marks about the release, “You have no idea how much I would appreciate all of you who are reading this listening/buying a CD from Wolf Town/showing your friends/assisting me in getting this out there as much as possible.”

Being Amazing!!
Being Amazing!! Australian pop-punk band today released their debut album on 7″ vinyl titled Perfect Male Specimen. The band consists of Wil Wagner from The Smith Street Band on bass and vocals, Tom Lawson a former member of the afore mentioned band on vocals and guitar and Dave Brown on drums. Perfect Male Specimen was recorded and mixed by Damien Maunders at Brady Music and mastered by Jason Sandford at DEX Mastering. The album’s use of fast paced distorted guitar strumming and zealous vocals make this album worth a listen. You can purchase the 7″ from Jack Knife Music, buy the digital version from their Bandcamp page on a “Name Your Price” basis or stream it below.

Listen: Pussy Wizard – “Brave Horatius (2001-2011)”

Brave Horatius
Pussy Wizard, lo-fi noise pop project have put out previously unreleased tracks from the old moniker Brave Horatius. Being recorded over ten years, this album encompasses a variety of different musical approaches as his sound evolved into the ability to produce multiple standout tracks. Personal favorites from this release include a gentle love song titled Carolina, Black Eyes, an upbeat track with punk roots, and a Misfits cover of Astro Zombies. Pick up the release on their Bandcamp page on a “Name Your Price” basis, or stream it below.

“I started playing music under the moniker Brave Horatius in 2001 when my parents got me a digital 8-track recorder. My mom had given me a book called Opal. It was the diary of a 6 year old orphaned girl. Brave Horatius was her dog and constant companion. I made a couple of really embarrassing tapes and gave them to a few friends. My punk band had broken up and I was sad because I got dumped for the first time. Typical early 2000’s late-teenage post fuck the system angst all encompassed by the depression of beginning to enter adulthood to a soundtrack of Fevers and Mirrors on repeat. College came with confusion and drinking and smoking and other not-so-hard drugs and more heartbreak and reading Bukowski and thinking “oh I get it now.” Whatever. I made a little zine/CDR EP thing, had a song on a compilation, put out a split, and did a few tours. Moved to San Francisco in 2008. Recorded songs with a 4-track in a vacant apartment above mine. Moved back to South Carolina in 2011 and decided the moniker was exhausted and boring. I worked a decade on trying to capture songs how they were imagined and never got it the way I wanted and I wanted to move on. So I made Pussy Wizard to avoid the seriousness that often leads to huge expectations that often lead to huge disappointments. But here is a time capsule of attempts at making a record I unrealistically imagined for far too long.”
