New ZAK! Track

A couple of months ago we interviewed ZAK! after the release of his mixtape, Stuck to the Sidewalk. You can read the interview here. He recently has released a new track to kickstart the summer. “Toast” is a remix by ZAK! over the dubstep song, “Gold Dust” by DJ Fresh. You can listen to the track below and download if you like what you hear.

The Wonder Years Album Stream

The Wonder Years have released a stream of their new highly anticipated album, Suburbia I’ve Given You All And Now I’m Nothing, which will be released on June 14 on Hopeless Records. You can listen to the stream and pre-order the album on their website here.

The band will be performing a hometown CD release show at the Starlight Ballroom in Philadelphia on June 14th with FireworksMixtapes, and Hostage Calm. This album is highly recommended for pop-punk lovers because it’s one of the best pop-punk albums I’ve heard in a long time.

The Starting Line Announces “Break” Is Over

Since taking a break in 2008 to focus on separate projects, The Starting Line have been engaging in much activity in recent time, hinting that the band may be back together, and even possibly working on a new album. They have announced a few playing dates with All Time Low for their, “Gimme Summer Ya’ Love” tour, which will be played with other bands such as CartelMayday Parade, and a few others. The official statement from Matt Watts, lead guitarist, is below:

“I just happened to read all the tweets and postings about everyone’s excitement about the TSL “break” being over. First off, I’d like to thank everyone for the excitement and enthusiasm, it really means a lot! It wasn’t intended to sound like an official announcement that the break is over, we all felt like it was over once we started playing shows again, but I guess hadn’t publicly acknowledged so.

So to address it:

As you’ve probably noticed, TSL has become slightly more active, and we even have a few new songs in the works. The main reason behind the break was to take some time and evaluate things, touring for 8+ years got really exhausting and we all needed to take a step away to see if TSL was something that we all still loved and wanted to pursue. After taking a much needed break, we’re all at a point where we truly love and appreciate what we were able to do together, and genuinely miss playing shows, writing, and being around one another.

Playing shows with the band, and even just getting together to hang out has been more fun than ever, everything is feeling great and natural, and seems as exciting as when we first started out. There’s just an undeniable chemistry and energy present that seemed to be lacking near the end of things.

That being said, we’re playing more shows and writing new music, but there’s no specific timeline that we’re on, nor do we have any real plans (as of right now), to be touring full time. That doesn’t mean that we won’t be playing shows in your city/town, it just means that we probably won’t be taking a traditional approach to touring and being an active band. All of us have various things and commitments happening in our lives that aren’t really conducive to year round touring. However, we do plan on playing shows more frequently and (slowly) working on a new album at some point. We’re also trying to figure out a way to get to some of the cities that we haven’t played since we went on “break” (talking to all of you on the West Coast).

We’ll keep you guys updated on any new developments!”

Stream Bon Iver’s ‘Bon Iver, Bon Iver’

Bon Iver‘s breathtaking new album Bon Iver, Bon Iver won’t be officially released by Jagjaguwar until June 21, but you can listen to the album in its entirety now on NPR. The follow up to 2007’s For Emma, Forever Ago, which was universally lauded by critics and fans, Bon Iver, Bon Iver offers the same emotion from singer-songwriter Justin Vernon, but trades For Emma‘s rawness for a more complete and vivid feel. Instead of the wintery atmosphere of For Emma, Justin’s latest effort is more fit for a warm summer’s night, perfect for the upcoming summer months.

Be sure to give the album a listen and to purchase it when it is released on June 21.

New: Domo Genesis – “Boss’ Life”

Odd Future‘s Domo Genesis took to his Twitter page last night to release a brand new track entitled “Boss’ Life”. Domo raps for a minute and 45 seconds over Snoop Dogg‘s original “Boss’ Life”, produced by Dr. Dre. The original can be found on Snoop’s 2006 release The Blue Carpet Treatment and features the late Nate Dogg, who provided the hook. RIP.

According to Domo, he recorded his verse over the song last night and then two hours later, decided to drop the track for his followers. The result? A chill track from Odd Future’s most laid back rapper. Look out for his new mixtape, the follow up to 2010’s Rolling Papers, which should be released sometime this year.

Stream the song or download it below.

Review: City and Colour – Little Hell

City and Colour – Little Hell

Released: June 7, 2011
Label: Dine Alone Records
Purchase: iTunes | Insound | Amazon

Recorded to tape in a church sans-computers and fancy recording booths is Dallas Green’s third studio album “Little Hell”, a beautiful record that changes up Green’s pure man-and-guitar sound, yet still maintains the unique City and Colour feel that listeners have grown to love.

Since his debut, the singer-songwriter has grown both musically and creatively. Little Hell is a true indicator of said growth; mixing up the track list with full band rock songs, trademark acoustic songs, and introducing synths and strings to diversify the instrumentals. It’s difficult to describe Little Hell accurately, as it doesn’t fit into one specific genre like Bring Me Your Love may have; however, each song is sung sincerely, and crafted with the utmost care.

The signature minimalist acoustic sound is not all lost in Little Hell, as “Silver and Gold” and “Northern Wind” primarily consist of just the man and his guitar, with the latter being a heart-on-sleeve song taking roots fromBring Me Your Love’s “The Girl”.

“Whether a natural disaster ripped it from it’s foundation
Or an economic tragedy tore apart it’s family
They’re all empty.”

“Natural Disaster” is a full band song that tackles the problems in our world, created by “natural disaster(s)” and “economic traged(ies)”. Given the subject, it’s surprising this song does not drip with melancholy. Regardless, this imagery-ridden track is one of Little Hell’s standouts.

Title track “Little Hell” begins with a riff bearing slight resemblance to those of Death Cab for Cutie. “Will we get out of this little hell?” is a stunning end to the song with Green’s smooth, effortless vocals and slow tempo band instrumental.

“Weightless” is a departure from Green’s more acoustic tracks, introducing an indie rock feel driven by the drumbeat rather than guitar. Interestingly, it works. Green’s distinct voice does not lose its clarity when singing loudly and contrasts unusually well with the dirty, flange-y guitar riffs.

Little Hell is by all means an emotional ride. “Hope For Now” concludes the record, beginning with a soft acoustic sound before the lyrics crescendo the song into a full band, deep guitar blasting second half with Green replying to “If I could sing one song and it could save someone’s life”, chanting “Then I would sing, all that I could sing”. This is a song that you truly feel.

Little Hell is not quite a complete transformation of one-man band City and Colour, but it is a work that reflects the change Dallas Green has gone through in his life since Sometimes. The fact Little Hell did not inherit an acoustic sound may disappoint some; however, Green is at a new stage in his career, in his life, and it is no surprise that his music changes accordingly. What hasn’t changed though, is Green’s second-to-none voice and musical talent that merits him to being one of the best singer-songwriters alive.

Maybeshewill

For Fans Of: 65daysofstatic

Maybeshewill play a unique brand of instrumental post-rock, drawing from electronic, metal, and progressive influences. The band, based in Leicestershire, Great Britain, is reminscent of a more riff-based, guitar-oriented 65daysofstatic, resulting in a well-developed sound which truly sets them apart from their peers. The added use of strings on tracks such as “To The Skies From A Hillside” lends their music a dramatic, almost theatrical (though not in a campy way) tone. Melodic piano lines are often utilized as well, creating some absolutely gorgeous soundscapes, most notably on “Red Paper Lanterns”, in which bell tones harmonize with the piano to create a modern day post-rock masterpiece. Whilst post-rock seems to progressively become more and more crowded with similar-sounding bands, Maybeshewill strive to incorporate originality into their compositions.

Their newest album, I Was Here For A Moment, Then I was Gone, released May 30th of this year, continues the sonic progression of their last few releases, leaving the listener to bask in the somber heaviness and more subdued, melancholic moments that prevail throughout the ten tracks. Good for those chill-out moments at home when surfing the web on sites like PartyPoker España or social networking.
