North Carolina rap legend Phonte is set to release his first ever solo release Charity Starts At Home on September 27, 2011 through FE Music. The first offering off this new project is “Not Here Anymore (feat. Elzhi)” and is produced by 9th Wonder. Phonte and 9th made up two-thirds of Little Brother, highly regarded as one of the most prominent underground rap groups of all time, before the trio officially broke up in 2010. With 9th Wonder handling the production duties, Phonte and former Slum Village member Elzhi share the mic and drop some thought-provoking, conscientious rhymes. Give it a spin below.
James Blake and Bon Iver‘s first and widely anticipated collaborative track, “Fall Creek Boys Choir”, was just released by Blake on his Youtube page. Featuring production by Blake and vocals from Vernon, “Fall Creek Boys Choir” is a pretty minimalistic effort. Vernon’s signature auto-tuned falsetto meshes pretty well with the simple, thumping bassline throughout the song. My only complaint? Blake seems to be incorporating a random dog bark in the beat, which seems to disturb the flow of the song rather than help it. Give the track a listen below.
The track will be available for purchase on iTunes next week on August 29, 2011 and according to the Youtube page, “Enough Thunder – Oct 2011”. Could it be another new song or a full-fledged EP or album? No word yet, but any further efforts by these two should be of extremely high quality.
Ryan Adams is set to release his brand new solo LP, Ashes & Fire, on October 11th via PAX-AM/Capitol, his thirteenth studio release and first on Capitol. Today, the singer-songwriter released the first cut from the album, “Lucky Now”. The deluxe bundle of the album (which you can preorder here) will come enclosed with a 3D Lenticular photo of Adams, an expanded booklet with 3D images, 3D glasses, and bonus track “Darkness”.
You can listen to “Lucky Now” below and check out the full tracklist after the break.
After promising a new track on Facebook, Gorilla Warfare Tactics follow through and have dropped a brand new cut entitled “Dark Saber Jedi”. The new song is fairly raw sounding, but it definitely has an old-school vibe. As always, GWT drop some sharp rhymes over a smooth beat. You can download below.
New Jersey designer/musician Seth Haley, perhaps better known by his stagename Com Truise, released his new album Galactic Melt in July 2011 to critical acclaim. His meticulously planned-out synth lines, combined with his love for ’80s electrofunk, make his music a must listen. Just today, Truise partnered with Pitchfork to release a free MP3 download of the appropriately-titled “Ether Drift”, a song taken directly from Galactic Melt. Check it out below.
MP3: Com Truise – “Ether Drift”
The tracklisting for Galactic Melt and Truise’s remaining 2011 tour dates can be seen after the break.
Casiokids return with a brand new track entitled “Det haster!”, the first single off their new album Aabenbaringen over aaskammen (“The revelation over the mountain”). Opening with muted birds chirping away in the background, the song quickly picks up with an overwhelming wave of synths and a throbbing, distorted bass line. Mesmerizing, dancey, and fun, “Det haster!” should be fairly representative of the rest of the album, out October 11th via Polyvinyl.

A little less than three hours to go until the release of Kanye West and Jay-Z‘s collaborative album Watch The Throne arrives exclusively via iTunes. If you’re as excited as we are, you can help pass the time by checking out some song snippets below. The two trailers for the album, which reveal very little but are still pretty interesting to watch, can also be seen below.
Mike G is often overlooked in the Odd Future family, especially considering his laid back attitude and calm, chill flow. He’s definitely one of the group’s more talented rappers though, and he proves this on a brand new track entitled “Chevron”. Posted on the Odd Future Twitter account, the new track is produced by fellow member Hodgy Beats (who knew Hodgy produced too?) and features Mike spitting some sweet rhymes. Don’t sleep on this one.
MP3: Mike G – “Chevron” (Prod. Hodgy Beats)
“Chevron” will be released on Mike G’s forthcoming Award Tour EP.
Bethany Cosentino fronted surf pop band Best Coast have been on quite a roll lately. After releasing the music video for single “Our Deal”, which was directed by Drew Barrymore and featured a star-studded cast including Donald Glover and Miranda Cosgrove, the band follow up with a brand new song called “How They Want Me To Be”. The new cut was recorded during the Crazy For You sessions but will be re-recorded and included on the band’s upcoming second album. No details yet on the album.

You can watch the video for “Our Deal” after the break.
While touring with electro-funk duo Chromeo, Mayer Hawthorne recorded his take on “When The Night Falls”, giving the lighthearted track a smooth, vintage vibe.
MP3: Chromeo – “When The Night Falls (feat. Solange Knowles) [Mayer Hawthorne Cover]”
