Listen: Kid Cudi – “Bigger Than You” [Unreleased 2007]

In 2007, rapper (and now rocker) Kid Cudi linked up with producer Emile for the first time to create a song called “Bigger Than You”. Here’s what Emile had to say about the song in a 2009 interview with Complex:

“He had in his head what he wanted to start the album with. Like way back it was a song called “Bigger Than You,” which some people might of heard because it leaked. It was a really dope record. “Bigger Than You” was actually the first record me and Cudi ever did together. It was on the first day that we met, we cut that song. Once we cut it, he was like, “That’s the intro to my album.” It stayed that way for a while, but that record was cut a long time before the album was ever done, so eventually it kinda faded out.”

This isn’t the first time this song has appeared on the Internet, making its initial appearance as “Do It Alone” on Cudi’s demo tape. This, however, is the completely mastered version from Emile. Listen for yourself above.

Interview: Phil The Thrill

My favorite thing about talking to artists is just hearing how humble they really are and how much work they’re putting in to achieve their dreams. Hard work definitely does pay off. So last week, I was extremely fortunate to speak to an up-and-coming rapper from Virginia named Phil The Thrill, who has been releasing an EP a month for the past five months, garnering attention from XXL Magazine and SmokingSection.com. On October 25th, Phil will be concluding the series with a full-length mixtape entitled Barely Awake, which you can preview here.

Check out my full interview with Phil below.

Hey Phil, what’s up? How’s it going?

Phil The Thrill: Good, good, good.

I’ve just been reading about Steve Jobs. Man, that’s terrible.

Phil The Thrill: Crazy, crazy. I mean, they knew it was gonna happen eventually, but it was just all of a sudden it seems like.

Yeah… ah, the man’s a genius. So I hear you’re 22 years old and from Newport News, Virginia, is that correct?

Phil The Thrill: Yessir.

Actually, where have I heard of that place from? Is that…Michael Vick’s hometown?

Phil The Thrill: Yeah, yeah. Michael Vick, Allen Iverson.

Oh, okay. How’s the music scene there?

Phil The Thrill: It’s… pretty scattered. This area is known as Hampton Roads, the 757. I’m not sure how familiar you are with this part of Virginia but Missy‘s from here, Timbaland‘s from here, Pharrell‘s from here,The Clipse are from here. So yeah, we have a pretty crazy rich tradition as far as music goes. It just seems like they’ll move away and you know, it’s hard to really get them back to reach out to artists that are coming up now. But as far as tradition goes, we’re definitely on the map when it comes to music, period. And then 45 minutes up the road is where Trey Songz and Chris Brown are from.

Man, that’s nice.

Phil The Thrill: Yeah, man, it’s crazy.

So where did your rapper name, Phil The Thrill, originate?

Phil The Thrill: It’s actually been a name that’s stuck with me. It’s actually been my nickname since I was around twelve years old. I was an athlete playing basketball and football and you know, when little nicknames happen to you when you’re a kid… they’d just be like “Oh, Phil The Thrill!” It sticks and through high school, when everyone would have AIM screennames, I was like lemme use my nickname. It stuck with me then and when I went on to play college basketball, it stuck with me there. So it became my Twitter name and once it sticks, I’m not going to try to change that just because I’m doing music. It’s my nickname and what people know me as. (more…)

Video: Matt & Kim (feat. Soulja Boy and Andrew WK) – “I’m A Goner”

Last year, Converse brought together Kid CudiVampire Weekend‘s Rostam Batmanglij, and Best Coast to create the cheery “All Summer”. Yet again, Converse has created another random combination of musicians, putting together Soulja BoyAndrew WK, and Matt & Kim to create the extremely catchy “I’m A Goner”, recorded at the Converse Rubber Tracks studio in Brooklyn. Talk about a weird group.

The video features the foursome rising from the dead to “throw a raging dance party in a morgue.”

You can download the track or find out more about the project over here.

First Impressions: Jay-Z & Kanye West – Watch The Throne

joomplu:300

Watch The Throne, probably one of the most hyped-up releases in quite a long time, has finally arrived. The work of rap superstars Jay-Z and Kanye West, the album reportedly took nine months and three attempts to create and fine-tune. Does it live up the hype? Is it the newest classic?

We decided to post our track-by-track impressions as each of us listened to the album for the first time. As we each finish, this post will be updated with our individual opinions. Right now, you can check out three sets of first impressions below. More to come soon!

Single: The Knux – “Run (feat. Kid Cudi)”

Track: “Run (feat. Kid Cudi)”
Artist: The Knux
Release Date: July 1, 2011
Label: Cherrytree/Interscope

Kid Cudi-featuring “Run” is the second song to drop from rap-rock duo The Knux, who will be releasing their sophomore effort later this year. It’s the same fresh, innovative sound that we’ve already heard from the hip hop duo, combined with the experimental rock sound that Cudi has been focusing on lately. But while Cudi’s new individual work has fallen quite flat (see “Perfect Is The Word”), “Run” is fun — it’s light-hearted, good-natured rock-rap, perfect for the summer months. There isn’t much substance here, but if you’re going to be anywhere near the sun for the next few months, it might be a good idea to keep “Run” on your playlist.

“Run (feat. Kid Cudi)” is from Eraser, set to be released in September via Cherrytree/Interscope.

Rating: 6.5/10

New: Kid Cudi & Dot Da Genius – “Perfect Is The Word”

Rapper-turned-rocker Kid Cudi and his long-time friend and go-to producer Dot Da Genius (who are collaborating under the moniker 2 Be Continuum) have released the first song from their forthcoming rock album Wizard. Like Cudi said previously, the rock album will give him a chance to experiment with his desire to produce songs with rock-inspired roots. “Perfect Is The Word” clearly demonstrates a new change in style and sound with an ominous guitar riff in the background and no rapped vocals from the Cleveland rapper.

Fans of Cudi’s traditional rapping need not worry, however. Back in January, he announced to fans via Twitter that a new rap mixtape A Man Named Scott will be released sometime this summer, as soon as he is “all rocked out” with Wizard.

Watch: MGMT With The Flaming Lips for “Kids”, Join Kid Cudi for “Pursuit of Happiness”

During their performance at the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis this weekend, MGMT joined the stage during The Flaming Lips‘ set, with the two groups performing an acoustic version of MGMT’s well-known “Kids”. You can check out a fan-recorded video of the performance above.

A few days back, Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser also made an appearnce on stage with rapper-turned-rocker Kid Cudi at the Roseland Ballroom. Cudder and MGMT performed their single “Pursuit of Happiness” from 2009’s Man On The Moon: The End of Day. Fellow contributors Ratatat did not, however, make an appearance. Check out a fan-recorded video below.

New: Kid Cudi – “Capcom”

The latest Kid Cudi track, entitled “Capcom”, is a nod to the Cleveland rapper’s videogame love, featuring a wild beat that is no doubt inspired by gaming soundtracks everywhere. Cudi goes all out, declaring his intention to take on the world in the chorus. According to Cudi, the song was recorded early last year for a Street Fighter game. It’s safe to say that this song will not appear on his upcoming summer mixtape A Man Named Scott or his rock album Wizard. Check out the song, as well as Cudi’s thoughts about it below.

“The song in which the world has titled “capcom” was done early last year for a project chad hugo and kenna were working on for a Street Fighter game and they reached out and asked me to be a part of it. This was a demo reference and i never really got to rework my verses or see the project through. Its old and isnt of my discography. I have a new jam im releasing soon and it will be current freshness. Stay tuned.”
