Our friend ZAK! Downtown sent over this brand new video for “Poppin’ Pills!” earlier today, one of the standout tracks from his debut mixtape Stuck to the Sidewalk. Relying on a well-flipped sample by producer Astro Raw, “Poppin’ Pills!” is a feel-good track, even if the music is about, well, poppin’ some prescription pills. Stay away from the pills, y’all.
ZAK! is planning on releasing a 10 track mixtape of original songs in early September. In the meantime, he’s out promoting and playing shows with Chiddy Bang, Hoodie Allen, and potentially Big Sean. We’ll keep you updated.
You might remember Chiddy of Chiddy Bang setting the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous freestyle — 9 hours, 18 minutes, 22 seconds of nonstop rapping — at MTV’s O Music Awards just over a month ago. After finishing his freestyle, Chiddy and Xaphoon took the stage to debut the lead single from their upcoming debut studio album Breakfast (out July 19), an upbeat jam entitled “Mind Your Manners”. The duo recently dropped their newest mixtape Peanut Butter and Swelly, available for download here.
We now have the full studio version of the song, which you can stream or download below. Furthermore, if you’re in LA and are interested in auditioning for the music video, more information is available here (shout out to my friend Marc at Mostly Junk Food for the link).
Chidera Anamege and Xaphoon Jones of Chiddy Bang have just released their new mixtape Peanut Butter And Swelly, the newest installment of Chiddy Bang’s sample-filled, witty-rhyming discography. This is a release that will no doubt be played heavily throughout the summer months and is intended to hold over fans until they release their highly-anticipated debut album Breakfast later this year. Just last week, we talked to the duo about their new projects. Swelly!

With their new mixtape Peanut Butter & Swelly just a few days away from release, Chiddy and Xaphoon of Chiddy Bang have decided to release a new song every day this week. The three new tracks released this week will lead up to the mixtape’s official release this Friday. The first track from the mixtape is titled “When You’ve Got Music” and features producer Xaphoon Jones sampling The Knocks, long-time friends of the rap duo. If you aren’t already excited for the mixtape’s release, this preview should spark some interest. Download and stream are below.
Just a few days ago, we talked to Chiddy and Xaphoon about the release of Peanut Butter & Swelly, as well as the release of their upcoming debut album Breakfast due out later this year via EMI. You can read that interview here.
Check out the full interview below.
Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege: Yo yo yo what’s up? How are you doing?
LitS: Good, how are you?
Chiddy: Good, good, just chilling in Orlando, Florida.
Noah “Xaphoon Jones” Beresin: Wassup?
LitS: First off, Chiddy, congratulations on your new world record. Nine hours is an incredibly long time. What was going through your head while you were freestyling?
Chiddy: What was going through my head was like, “Man, I hope I have the endurance to be able to successfully rap for nine hours.” After the first hour, I was like man I could do this because I thought I had been rapping for maybe twenty minutes or so, but when I looked at the clock it had already been an hour, hour-fifteen. I was like, oh that went by kind of fast! Time pretty much flew by.
LitS: Why did you guys decide to do the freestyle in the first place?
Noah: I think it was actually our manager’s idea, right?
Chiddy: Yeah, it was our manager’s idea.
Noah: Our manager came up to Chiddy and was like, “Yo, you’re gonna rap for nine hours. It’s gonna happen.”
Chiddy: And I was just like, “Okay, I mean, I can rap, you know what I’m saying?” I thought about it and was like it’s a big achievement, you know, and I was thinking to myself, like I could actually have a Guinness Record. This was something I felt that although it was long and extremely strenuous, I did it. (more…)
Chidera Anamege, the rapping half of Chiddy Bang, is currently performing an eight hour freestyle in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for “Longest Freestyle Rap”. The rap is live from Las Vegas for MTV’s digital music awards show, The OMA’s. Watch the performance live here.
You can help out by suggesting topics for the freestyle via Chiddy’s Twitter using the hashtag #RapWorldRecord.
The Philadelphia duo will also be releasing their new mixtape, Peanut Butter and Swelly, later today. Links will be provided when available.
To celebrate reaching 10,000 followers on Twitter, producer Xaphoon Jones leaked a new Chiddy Bang song entitled “Rebel”. The song samples “He’s A Rebel” by The Crystals and is a surprisingly polished demo.
“Rebel”, however, will not be included in Chiddy Bang’s debut album The Swelly Life, which currently has no scheduled release date.

Chiddy Bang‘s The Preview can be purchased on iTunes for $6.99. Read my review for The Preview here.
Sufjan Stevens‘s The Age of Adz is on iTunes for $9.99. Sufjan’s latest features a new change in sound, taking a step away from his traditional folk music towards a more electronic style.
You, Me, and Everyone We Know‘s Some Things Don’t Wash Out is currently on sale for $7.99 on iTunes. The band’s debut release is a fun, catchy pop-punk record that captures the essence of the band’s two free EPs while still demonstrating their emerging maturity.

The Preview is exactly what it is packaged as: a preview. Standing as a placeholder for the duo’s upcoming debut album The Swelly Life, The Preview is an eight-track album: a perfect sampler of the group’s wide musical palette. For someone who may be new to the group’s music, this record is a perfect starting point, documenting their meteoric rise to fame.
“The main purpose of this release is to give our fans some new music while we finish recording our debut album, The Swelly Life. It’s called The Preview because it gives listeners a glimpse of what’s to come onSwelly,” says Xaphoon Jones.
The Preview features three tracks from the duo’s first mixtape, The Swelly Express, which was highly received and led to the group’s record deal with EMI. “Truth” features a sample from Passion Pit’s “Better Things”, “Opposite Of Adults” features MGMT’s “Kids”, and “All Things Go” samples Sufjan Stevens’s “Chicago”.
“Nothing On We” combines Chiddy’s clever, yet contemplative rhymes with the signature electronic beat from Xaphoon. Chiddy’s singing in the hook, oddly, slightly resembles Akon’s “Sorry, Blame It On Me” and features a shout out to Kanye West and his G.O.O.D Music record label with the line “And it isn’t what it seems / So just like Yeezy, we steady getting out our dreams / That’s G.O.O.D.”
Seventh track “Bad Day” samples the heartfelt Darwin Deez and while Chiddy’s verses are new, the remix itself is not. Xaphoon previously remixed the track on The Xaphoon Jones Mixtape Vol. 1, his first mixtape release. Serving as a perfect example of Xaphoon’s production talents, the synthesizer buzzing in the background is a great addition and keeps the track bouncing along at a fast pace. Chiddy’s rapping talents are also highlighted when clever lines such as “Happiness is a warm gun / Living fully loaded” are juxtaposed with somber reflections on how success has changed some of his relationships.
The record, much like the rest of the group’s work, is a fun, carefree listening experience. It should be taken into account that The Preview should be listened to and judged not as an album, but as a sampler of the band’s upcoming debut release. For this very reason, this review is not as thorough and has no actual score. The Preview serves as a perfect preview (how ironic, huh?) to the duo’s 2011 release and should be enough to tide old fans over, as well as win over new ones.
Standout Tracks: “Opposite of Adults”, “Bad Day (feat. Darwin Deez)”
