With Childish Gambino and Drake releasing their new albums today, I thought it would be fun to make a playlist composed of actor-rappers. Interestingly enough, both of these artists began their careers as fairly well-known actors: Gambino currently acts on NBC’s Community, writes for 30 Rock, and more, while Aubrey Drake Graham famously got his start as a child actor on Degrassi. The following playlist contains some rapper-turned-actors such as Mark Wahlberg and Will Smith as well as other actor-turned-rappers like Method Man. You can listen to the full MiaoMix below. Some popular movies or TV shows that the rappers acted in are in brackets. Also, if you enjoyed Method Man’s “World Gone Sour (Lost Kids)”, you should check out the music video after the break.
Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch (Three Kings, The Departed) – Good Vibrations
DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, I Am Legend) – Summertime
Snoop Dogg (Starsky & Hutch, Down For Life) – Gin and Juice
Ice Cube (Boyz n the Hood, Friday) – It Was A Good Day
Mos Def (Be Kind Rewind, The Italian Job) – Mathematics
Drake (Degrassi: The Next Generation) – Club Paradise
Childish Gambino (Community, Mystery Team) – Heartbeat
Method Man (The Wire, How High) – World Gone Sour (Lost Kids)
If you aren’t currently hooked on the Take Care leak or ASAP Rocky‘s new mixtape, there’s still plenty of new rap music to keep you busy. After premiering a new track, “Heartbeat”, on radio station Hot 97 earlier in the day, Gambino decided to team up with NPR and release his entire album for streaming online. Praised for his lyrical wit and his Internet-famous punchlines, Gambino has drawn numerous comparisons to Young Money ringleader Lil Wayne and seems poised to steal away some of the spotlight from Drake. Camp will be out November 15th.

NBC sure is treating comedian/actor/rapper Donald Glover well. After appearing as Troy Barnes on Thursday night’s episode of Community, Glover returned to NBC as Childish Gambino on Friday night to perform his latest single “Bonfire” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Although Glover is no stranger to TV, he was actually making his first ever appearance as Gambino last night, rocking the stage with his electrifying, punch-line laden rap and a live band accompanying him. Check out the replay below.
This mashup came out a couple of days ago, but I thought it should be posted here so more people could listen to it. It’s a mashup of Childish Gambino‘s “Put It In My Video” and Chiddy Bang‘s “Mind Your Manners”. You can listen to the feel-good track below.
DJ 21azy has already done some pretty good mashups, so if you like this mashup make sure to check out his Soundcloud page here.
Donald Glover / Childish Gambino appeared at San Diego’s Comic Con this weekend to promote his show Community, but the actor/rapper also managed to play a show on Friday night, tearing up the House of Blues and premiering a brand new song. Apologizing for his recent disappearance online and lack of tweets, Gambino announced to the energized audience that he has been busy working on new material before launching into the song, our first taste of the new album. While most of the beat is hard to make out, Gambino’s clever punchlines are clear enough to be made out: “Man, why does every black actor have to rap some? I dunno, all I know is I’m the best one.”
Check out the video after the break. Childish Gamino’s new album will be out in September.
Childish Gambino, also known as Donald Glover, dropped a new track today entitled “Break (AOTL)”, flipping Kanye West‘s “All Of The Lights”. The newest song will be included in Donald’s upcoming project IAMDONALD. Gambino’s signature flow, witty punchlines, and an interesting acoustic twist on the song make this track a must-listen.
Listen or download below.
Check out Childish Gambino performing his latest single “Freaks and Geeks” live and acoustic here. The video was posted by Donald Glover himself via his Twitter account.
You can catch Donald on his IAMDONALD Tour through April and May. Check out the dates here. Childish Gambino’s upcoming Freaks and Geeks EP will be out on March 8, 2011.
Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino or Troy from Community, has announced dates for an upcoming IAMDONALD Tour showcasing both his comedic and music talents. He explained, “IAMDONALD TOUR is an interactive experience that uses live music, comedy, and video to covey the personal experience of being me, Donald Glover. Everyone who comes to the show will leave the show my best friend.”
He also added, “IAMDONALD is about not letting people define you. A lot of my fans tweet or email me saying how they like that I do a lot of things and are held back by people saying ‘You’re a writer. Why are you acting?’ or ‘You can’t rap about the show Rugrats.’ I say ‘F**k that.’ That’s pretty much the show.’
