Album: Pussy Wizard- F.J.V. 1

Pussy Wizard is a relatively new band with their latest content being released in February 2012. They currently have two EP’s: F.J.V. 1 and ABRACOOLDADBRO. I downloaded their second album a long time ago and couldn’t stop listening to the song “West Coast Ghosts”. After recently hearing two of their songs on some playlists (Fork and Spoon’s Free Love Free Download playlist, for instance), I have fallen into an obsession with the band and downloaded their first EP. Both EP’s are incredible, with such an original sound that keeps the smooth vibes flowing from song to song. They are currently available for free on Pussy Wizard’s Bandcamp. You can listen to F.J.V. 1 below.

Mix: Every Day I’m Studying

Finals are rolling around the bend for me. While it’s very likely that I won’t study for the majority of my finals, I have to deceive myself into thinking I might actually work.

I personally have to listen to music while I study; despite all of the research that proves this is a terrible habit, it’s the only way I can focus. Instead, I try to keep the songs light and keep out upbeat songs or things that have a beat to them. Lyrics also really distract me at times because they can just be so catchy. Here’s a few songs put together for your studying with no real intended flow to the mix.

Maps and Atlases Release ‘Beware and Be Grateful’

This past week, folk rock band Maps and Atlases released their brand new LP, Beware and Be Grateful, along with the dates of their April European tour. I’ve been listening to Maps and Atlases for a while now, as well as lead singer Dave Davison’s side project Cast Spells, and I can safely say that their music continues to develop both in general sound and in complexity. They create a very low key presence on their albums, yet the quartet from Chicago can really put on a rad show.

Check out my favorite from the album “Be Three Years Old” below:

Beware and Be Grateful Tracklist:

  1. Old & Gray
  2. Fever
  3. Remote & Dark Years
  4. Silver Self
  5. Vampires
  6. Be Three Years Old
  7. Bugs
  8. Old Ash
  9. Important

Spring Break Hipster Trash Mix

As spring break rolled around this year, I realized that I would be stuck in the car for hours upon hours while visiting faraway relatives. To prepare myself and to make the trip much more fun, I compiled a short mix of songs that are almost appropriately considered “hipster trash.”

Enjoy, if your into that kind of stuff.

Listen: Reptar – Sebastian

Indie pop band Reptar from Athens, Georgia have announced that May 1st is the expected release date of their debut album Body Faucet. Whether you are watching a show live or sitting alone in your room, you can’t help but dig their catchy sound. I sprinted over a half mile across Lollapalooza and through massive crowds to see these guys live, and it was completely worth it. Reptar has distinct electronic-pop vibes that can only be described as follows: “Imagine you take a giant stuffed panda bear and you animate it using ultraviolet rays. You also take Big Bird. You put them in a room to fight to the death with marshmallow swords.”

Take a listen to their new single “Sebastian” below. It is also available for download on their website.

Body Faucet Tracklisting:
01. Sebastian
02. Please Don’t Kill Me
03. Isoprene Bath
04. Orifice Origami
05. Houseboat Babies
06. Natural Bridge
07. Ghost Bike
08. New House
09. Thank You Gliese 370 b
10. Sweet Sipping Soda
11. Three Shining Suns
12. Water Runs

Listen: Beach Fossils – “Shallow”

February 21st will mark the official release of new single “Shallow” from Jingle Jangle band Beach Fossils, which will be released alongside B-side track “Lessons”. Beach Fossils, who are known for their dreamy lo-fi and summery vibes, are currently leading into a release later this year to follow up last year’s What A Pleasure EP. Via the folks over at Pretty Much Amazing, “Shallow” is available for free streaming and download below.

Listen: Elvis Depressedly – “Waves of Bad Infection”

Mat Cothran recently just released his first studio recording under the moniker Elvis Depressedly, supposedly his one and only time recording in an actual recording studio. Check out his new song “Waves of Bad Infection”, which is available on his blog Summer Time in Hell, or below. Mat also recently compiled the Elvis Depressedly songs onto a full length LP, Cutters Only, The Ontological Anarchy of Elvis Depressedly, which is currently available for purchase on iTunes, but will also be released for free in the near future.

Recently I was flown to the middle of the country to record a few songs, this is one of them.  More info on this stuff as I’m allowed to disclose it.  Thanks for your ears.

Stream: That Ghost – Rosalind EP

Ryan Thomas Schmale recently released his second album under the moniker That GhostRosalind EP has a very dark tone compared to the more catchy bedroom lo-fi vibes that were present on Young Friday. Schmale looks to the past for his inspiration, whether it be cinema or pictures of historical figures. In his words: “Each haunting melody elicits ghosts past, fading memories, and memories that were never our own.” This album, appropriately, is in honor of Rosalind, the woman featured in the album cover, and can be purchased on the Two Syllable Records Bandcamp. You can stream the entire thing below.

Interview: Kent State

Today, we take a look at something a little bit different: the psychedelic death pop band Kent State. Almost all of Kent State’s music is available for free on their Bandcamp or on the Paranoidfutures blog, which also contains updates for Doleful Lions, Airlooms, and At The Heart of The World. For a quick sample, you can check out the song “Pains” from Kent State’s split album with Doleful Lions at the very bottom.

Can you first state your name and role in the band?

I’m Nicholas. I play guitar and sing and do just about everything you hear on the recordings.

When and how did Kent State begin?

Kent State began as a side project to my 80’s punk/hardcore band Deep Sleep. My love for Guided By Voices and a friend giving me his dusty four track recorder inspired me to start messing with home recording. After about a month or so I came up with the Spahn Ranch EP and I’ve been writing and recording daily and have released 5 more EP’s. In October, I moved to Los Angeles looking for warm weather and a change of scenery. I’ve teamed up with some friends I’ve met along the way through Deep Sleep and will hopefully be playing live soon.

What is the music scene like in LA and how does that affect you?

I’ve just arrived and have been to a few shows but don’t really know too much about the scene. I’ve already seen some rad stuff that I never would have seen on the East Coast. We are having a blast out here.

What is the meaning behind the name Kent State?

I hope to conjure up dark imagery with the name, lyrics, and mood of the songs in Kent State. The name is referring to the Kent State massacre which occurred May 4th, 1970 at Kent State University.

You have done some split albums with Doleful Lions, Airlooms, and At The Heart of The World. What is your take on split albums and how does it affect the style of the music you produce?

I wanted to release my own stuff and thought I’d start out by doing tapes. I asked some friends who also were doing home recordings to do splits with Kent State. The whole thing snowballed into a three tape set. If you put the Kent State recordings together, you could also consider it our nine song full length. We have them all up separately or together as Past Lives on our bandcamp for free.

How does being more independent affect the production of your music? Would you choose to sign to a record label if you had the opportunity?

I’ve been writing, recording and touring with independent punk and hardcore bands for years. I prefer the D.I.Y approach as I like to have as much creative control with the art and music as possible. After a few months of releasing stuff for free online I decided to make the jump to physical releases, which is what brought about the split tapes with Airlooms, Doleful Lions and At The Heart of The World. There were a few labels who got in touch but they weren’t interested in keeping the music free online so I decided to do the tapes myself.

Will we be seeing some new material coming soon?

I am always working on new stuff and putting free stuff for download on my blog/Bandcamp on all of the time. Hopefully some vinyl by the end of summer.
