Watch: The Front Bottoms – “Twin Size Mattress”

TFB
The Front Bottoms have released a new song titled Twin Size Mattress accompanied by a music video which you can watch below. This song is from their new album Talon of the Hawk that will be released on the 21st of May through Bar/None Records. You can pre-order Talon of the Hawk as a 12″ vinyl or a CD.

…more fireworks, more swimming pools, more beer, more fun.

The release of the new album will be followed by a tour of the USA which you can buy tickets for here. For more information, check out their Facebook page and website. The following was said about the upcoming album by Bar/None Records. “At the core of The Front Bottoms’ new album Talon of the Hawk, is the crazy hybrid of slamming rock drumming and acoustic guitar The Front Bottoms are known for, but this time the band augments their sound with electric guitars, synths, even a little accordion. Over top is Brian Sella’s confident heartfelt vocals that will have you laughing one minute, crying the next and then maybe pumping your fist and singing along when you least suspect it. Talon of the Hawk rocks harder than their debut and it is more complex in both subject matter and arrangements. Once this sucker gets it’s claws in you’re going to soar.”

Matt Corby’s Past, Present & Future

Matt Corby
After a very successful 2012, which found Matt Corby’s name spread with his song Brother, winning the ARIA music awards “Song of the Year”, as well as being nominated for “Breakthrough Artist” and “Best Male  Artist”. Though he was formerly a contestant on Australian Idol, Corby has demonstrated how that is behind him, releasing an incredible three song EP, Made of Stone. His voice can only be described as, beautifully haunting.

Matt Corby has also released four other EPs: Into the Flame, Transition to Colour, My False, and Song For… This artist is not only meant for fans of folk music, but everyone. He writes powerful songs to pump you up, as well as more emotional laid back ones to listen to when relaxing. He is currently in the studio writing and recording for his debut album which is scheduled to be released next year. To keep up to date, you can check out his website and his Facebook Page where you can download his music.

The Story of The Falls

The Falls

They met. They fell in love.
They wrote songs.
They fought. They made up.
They broke up.
They wrote songs.

The Falls focus their songwriting on documenting the love, betrayal, and the heartbreak of relationships. This Sydney based indie/folk duo decided that it would be better to create music, rather than just wallow in sadness. These fledgling recordings were just the beginning of what has become their debut EP HOLLYWOOD, which will soon be released sometime during March in North America.

Known for their live performances, and the emotion that is put into them, The Falls create intoxicating melodies, paralleled with their signature elegant harmonies. With an unmistakable sound, barefoot collaborators and best friends The Falls are definitely worth watching out for in 2013. For more information you can check out their website, and see their North American tour dates below.

Listen: Lake Michigan – “Self-Titled”

Lake Michigan
Lake Michigan, lo-fi acoustic solo project equipped with disarmingly honest lyrics have released their debut self-titled album. Chris Marks, inspired by the hushed and melodic sounds of Death Cab For Cutie and American Football, recorded, mixed, and mastered this release by himself. This collection of nine slow and sad tracks accurately touches on the themes of adolescent ontology. The album is available to purchase from Wolf Town DIY as a CD and also you can stream it below from Bandcamp.

A message from Marks about the release, “You have no idea how much I would appreciate all of you who are reading this listening/buying a CD from Wolf Town/showing your friends/assisting me in getting this out there as much as possible.”

Listen: Devendra Banhart – “Never Seen Such Good Things”

url
Folk artist Devendra Banhart will release his eighth studio album, Mala, on March 5 through his own label Nonesuch. Banhart uses a mixture of both English and Spanish throughout his soft and smooth folk melodies. From the three tracks that have been released so far, it appears Banhart has shifted to a much more instrumentally sound style. The record feels a lot less raw than previous albums, such as Cripple Crow. This may be a result of the old Hip-hop recorder used for this album, although his sound has ultimately progressed in a subtle way. The album is currently available for pre-order on his website, and you can stream “Never Seen Such Good Things” below.

Tracklisting:
1. Golden Girls
2. Daniel
3. Für Hildegard von Bingen
4. Never Seen Such Good Things
5. Mi Negrita
6. Your Fine Petting Duck
7. The Ballad of Keenan Milton
8. A Gain
9. Won’t You Come Over?
10. Cristobal
11. Hatchet Wound
12. Mala
13. Won’t You Come Home
14. Taurobolium

So, we called up our good friend Mark Jaworski and asked him if he wanted to bring his camera along, drink Four Loko and light them off. This is what happened.”

Marcus Foster’s Discography So Far

Marcus Foster
Marcus Foster, British singer-songwriter from southwest London has a sound that is often compared to Bob Dylan, Otis Reading, and St. Vincent. It contains a folk aesthetic with a blues twist, as he is often accompanied by brass horns. Though starting under the radar by moonlighting as a singer around London, in 2008 he saw his name gain popularity around the United States after contributing his song I Was Broken to the first Twilight soundtrack.

By 2010, the demand for Marcus Foster started to grow with in the US, which led to musical appearances on the Jimmy Fallon Show, as well as tours around the country. In the following year, Foster finally released his debut album, Nameless Path which contains “timeless quality which was once appreciated”. Furthermore his second EP The Last House was released in late 2012, and contains some of most diverse work to date. So if you are looking for some calming folk/blues tunes that contain sounds rarely heard in today’s music, Marcus Foster is the man you are looking for.

His music is available on iTunes, as well as his website. Furthermore, Foster will be touring around the United States during March and April, whilst completing his second album, tour dates can be found on his Facebook page.

Listen: Mark Martyre – “Down, Record”

Mark Martyre
Mark Martyre, Canadian singer-songwriter, late last year unveiled the album Down, Record. This release sounds as if Bruce Springsteen with his raspy vocals decided to put out a solo acoustic album, modelling the guitar and harmonica stylings of Neil Young. It is gratifying to see modern artists continuing to produce exceptional folk albums. In Martyre’s words about his release, “I’ve always paid attention to the lyrics in the songs I listen to. It’s always been an important part to me. I tried to keep the music simple, and give the lyrics, and the listener room to breathe.” Down, Record is available to purchase on his Bandcamp page and stream below. More information about Mark Martyre can be found on his website and Facebook page.

Review: Ben Howard – “The Burgh Island EP”

The Burgh Island EP

Released: October 31, 2012
Label: Island Records
Purchase: iTunes | Amazon

After his sensational debut album Every Kingdom, Ben Howard’s newest release The Burgh Island EP has not disappointed. Though fans have come accustomed to the smooth, acoustic, folk songs experienced in the album, The Burgh Island EP demonstrates a darker side to his songs, highlighted by the use of the electric guitar rather than his usual acoustic self. Yet the gritty, and albeit, gloomy sounds does not take away from the emotion and soul that is put into the lyrics and songs themselves. The songs were all inspired by his memories from surfing the beaches of Burgh Island, which leads to question, why create a darker tone for the songs?

Though fans and listeners would agree that the sound of this EP is completely different, it does not mean it’s a bad change. The opening track “Esmerelda” begins with eerie sounds, which grow more powerful as the song progresses through the beats, perfectly complemented by the rasp in his voice. The second track “Oats In The Water” on the other hand uses the electric guitar differently by creating a more bluesy electric sound, thus producing a more calming and memorable vocal melody. My personal favorite track of this album is the final one appropriately titled “Burgh Island”. This track most resembles the style of songs portrayed in the  album Every Kingdom. Much like Ben Howard’s popular track, “Black Flies” it’s a mostly calm song throughout, but has a powerful punch in the middle and near the end. Though it is not as catchy, it will definitely be a favorite to those fans of Every Kingdom.

This album also excites me as it demonstrates that Ben Howard doesn’t have just one style, but illustrates that he has a variety of styles, leaving fans wondering, what will he do next? For those following Ben Howard, he will be touring in New York, New Jersey and Virginia, for a week beginning February 11th with another of my personal favorite bands Mumford and Sons.

Listen: Wil Wagner – “Laika”

Wil Wagner
Pre-orders for Wil Wagner’s upcoming solo release Laika are now available from Poison City Records. Two out of the eight new tracks are available to listen on Poison City’s bandcamp page, including How They Made Us and the much anticipated Laika. The album was recorded in Tasmania in December of last year with producer and fellow Poison City artist Lincoln LeFevre.

After being blown away by Wagner’s lyrics and sound on The Smith Street Band’s latest album Sunshine & Technology, I am excited to hear this collection of new acoustic solo songs. You can order the 12″ vinyl and CD from the Poison City Records Store and listen to two of the tracks below.
