Hooray! released their third album today entitled bedhead remedy. This album consists of ten perfectly crafted ambient tracks with a collaboration of noise, acoustic guitar, percussion loops, spoken-word, and synthesizers. For fans of shoegaze, this release is definitely worth checking out and is available for free download on Hooray!’s Bandcamp page.
In his words: “All my songs are made in one sitting. If they don’t get finished during that period of time, then they remain that way… (This makes for lots of unfinished/empty/demo-ish songs.) I like to think it’s not because of laziness, but because when I record a song it’s made purely from what I feel at that moment. And since I’m so all over the place and inconsistent with my thoughts & feelings that to try and revisit those feelings becomes nearly impossible. These songs are my attempt at capturing those feelings and thoughts and keeping them in a little jar. These songs are moments of my life that I’ll never get back.”
Although electronic duo Crystal Castles are busy planning to record a new album, it looks like they’re not completely done with their last one, and have released a “fashion video” for their song “Suffocation”. The video, which features member Alice Glass poignantly moving around and changing into various dresses, is directed by band member Ethan Kath, and you can watch it over at Vs.Magazine. Stay tuned for more info on their new album.

Bon Iver‘s S. Carey will make his solo return with a brand new four-track EP entitled Hoyas. Set for release on Jagjaguwar (home to Bon Iver), Hoyas was, according to the press release, recorded in an attic studio “using a single laptop and not much else… Some sounds were composed by handcrafted instruments and others by junk. At times, Carey tracked vocals using nothing more than his laptop’s internal microphone, and most of the beats and synthesized sounds were sequenced and arranged using stock-software.” Bon Iver bandmate Justin Vernon then mixed and produced the album, which is currently scheduled for a May 8th release.
In the meantime, you can watch S. Carey and Justin Vernon in their recent Bon Iver live acoustic session here.
Hoyas EP Tracklist:
01. Two Angles
02. Avalanche
03. Inspir
04. Marfa
Dance Gavin Dance have released a live music video for their song “Heat Seeking Ghost Of Sex” from their 4th album Downtown Battle Mountain II, which was released in March 2011. You can check out the video below.
Any longtime Kid Cudi fan is familiar with the story of the long-lost “Dose of Dopeness” track produced by Dot Da Genius, who produced Cudi’s entire new rock album WZRD. Recorded all the way back in 2008, “Dose of Dopeness” was a live favorite but was never fully finished and released. After countless delays and pushbacks, Dot Da Genius finally liberated the track via Twitter. It’s clearly classic Cudder with his old melodic, sing-songy flow and even features him rapping about how underground his music is.
Check out a new music video from Los Angeles based hip hop collective Odd Future for their song “Rella”, which features Tyler the Creator, Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis and production by Left Brain. The video comes chock full of funky wigs, samurai space suits, and laser transforming genitalia and is in promotion for the group’s next release, OF Tape Vol. 2, which will be coming out March 20th through their own Odd Future Records.
Also coming up for the crew is the premiere of their own TV show on Adult Swim, Loiter Squad. The show will premiere five days after their new tape on March 25th, and you can check out a teaser over at World Star Hip Hop.
During tonight’s War Child 2012 benefit show, Blur members Graham Coxon (guitar) and Damon Albarn (vocals) got together to premiere a new song titled “Under the Westway”. The song features Albarn on vocals and piano while Coxon plays the accoustic guitar, and, as Stereogum pointed out, it does sound very Bowie-esque and special. You can watch the video below or download a rip over here.
The britpop pioneers have also recently announced that they will be headlining an Olympic Closing Ceremony gig this fall August 12th at Hyde Park. Although the band has reunited plenty of times in their eight year hiatus, it looks like they will be sticking together this time, and are also recording a new album. Stay tuned for more Blur news.
If there’s one thing that’s consistent about Blu besides his sharp rhymes and quick wit, it’s the fact that he’s always full of surprises. After randomly uploading his second album with producer Exile onto his Bandcamp page earlier this year, Blu has done it again by posting up UCLA, a brand new album completely produced by Madlib. The two California legends have been reported to be working with each other on UCLA for quite a while, but few details were ever released, with many believing that Blu had once again scrapped a project. Today, we can listen to the entire album or purchase it for a cool 15 bucks.
I’ve yet to understand Blu’s affinity for unmastered, lowish-quality tracks and UCLA is no exception. Although Blu and Madlib deliver and the plain fact that Blu is one of my favorite MCs of all time, the quality isn’t necessarily the best and the project sounds like a work in progress. You can listen for yourself below and purchase it here.
